Low AOV: How Free Shipping Bars Lift Order Value 15–30%

Free shipping thresholds are the single highest-leverage AOV tool on Shopify. Here's how to set yours.

5 min read·Updated April 2026

79% of online shoppers say free shipping is the #1 factor that makes them more likely to buy (NRF). Yet most Shopify stores either don't offer it, hide the threshold, or set the threshold so high it never gets hit. Done correctly, a free shipping bar lifts AOV by 15–30% within 30 days.

The threshold formula

Set your free shipping threshold at 30–35% above current AOV. That's the range tested across thousands of Shopify stores by Convertwise and Baymard. Higher than that and most carts can't reach it; lower and you give away margin on orders that would have happened anyway.

  • $95–100matching threshold (30%+)
  • +15–30%AOV lift when communicated

Why a bar matters more than the policy itself

If the threshold isn't surfaced before the cart page, it doesn't change behavior. The bar is the surfacing mechanism. Three patterns to use:

1. Static threshold bar

"Free shipping on orders over $95". Visible everywhere, no math required. Best for stores with a small catalog and consistent AOV.

2. Dynamic remaining-amount bar

"You're $12 away from free shipping". Updates as items get added to the cart. Powerful because it gives a precise next-action prompt. Lifts AOV up to 30% for stores with diverse cart compositions.

3. Tiered shipping bar

"$50 = free shipping · $100 = free express · $150 = free gift". Stacks incentives. Use when you have a wide AOV range and want to push the high-end.

Setup in Flexibar

  1. Create a bar with the Free shipping template.
  2. Enter your threshold in store currency.
  3. Enable Dynamic remaining amount if your theme supports cart events (most Shopify 2.0 themes do).
  4. Geo-target by region if your shipping policy varies (e.g. $50 US / €60 EU / £45 UK).

Margin protection

Free shipping is "free" only to the customer. To protect margin:

  • Build shipping cost into your product price (the European model)
  • Set the threshold at a level where the marginal order covers the marginal shipping cost plus your blended margin
  • Exclude oversized SKUs or international zones from the offer via the bar's targeting rules

Quick test: run your current AOV plus 30% as the threshold for two weeks. If AOV goes up by more than your shipping cost increase, you've found the sweet spot. If not, lower the threshold by 10% and retest.
